L K E T H E PRECEDING ARTICLES in this ' semi-annual series 1 this survey is based on notes written by members of the Re fer ence Staff of the Columbia University L i braries. A n innovation in this issue is the inclusion of a f e w titles in the sciences, annotations for which were written by assistants in the Columbia science libraries. Notes written by assistants and used unchanged are signed with initials. A s the purpose of the list is to present a selection of recent scholarly and foreign works of interest to reference workers in university libraries, it does not pretend to be either well-balanced or comprehensive. Code numbers (such as G 1 3 and 1 A 3 8 ) have been used to refer to titles in the Guide and its first Supplement.
